What brought you to Mountain Strength CrossFit?
I was turning 40, and needed a complete physical reboot. I ran varsity cross country and track in college (which will no doubt shock my 6am class mates who see me suffer through our runs today). But without a team, I lost my motivation to train, I got heavy, and I’d get injured when I tried to get back in shape. I really liked the idea of group workouts, and liked CrossFit’s emphasis on variety and mobility.
What is your favorite exercise or movement?
Deadlifts and double unders. I’m fairly uncoordinated, and the deadlift was the first move where I felt even halfway competent: it’s almost primal. And double unders for the opposite reason–I had a VERY hard time with them, but have been grinding away at them a little bit every day, and am starting to figure them out, which feels really good.
What is a skill or movement that you are working on to improve?
I know everyone hates burpees, but I really struggle if we need to do more than a few: I think I need to go to “burpee camp.” And I’m working on a full hand-stand pushup (no abmats), if only because the first time I saw Rich demo one, I actually laughed out loud–as in “yeah right–that’s not going to happen.” Now I think I can get there.
What changes have you seen in yourself since you started at Mountain Strength CrossFit?
My strength improved throughout my first year, but the real surprise has been the current Paleo challenge. I totally underestimated the impact of eating clean: I dropped 12 pounds in the first two weeks, and have seen a real performance bump–especially in the shorter Challenge workouts. Only downside is I need new pants. 🙂
What is your favorite memory of Mountain Strength CrossFit?
Finishing the Murph was special, even in dead last: I was proud of having done all the reps. But mostly it’s just the feeling of being on a team again, especially with partner workouts–I’d forgotten how much further you can push yourself when everyone around you is working hard, too.
