Fortitude and Perseverance: What it takes to be a great Weightlifter

What do you think makes a great weightlifter? First, let me define what a weightlifter is. A weightlifter is some who lifts weights using the Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Using these movements and other variations, they practice the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. As many of you may know, this method of training isn’t easy by any means. It requires repeat repetition with an empty bar, allowing one to develope the neuromuscular pathways desired to effectively perform the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk. This is difficult for many because most lack patient. Those who are patient and diligent about their training are the ones that succeed. Another difficult aspect of weightlifting is that it’s completely individual. It’s you VS the barbell. You have no one else to blame for your failures or commend for your successes but yourself.

So again, what does it take to be a great weightlifter? As mentioned before, patience and discipline are needed but there’s a third quality that successful weightlifters have, ambition. All good weightlifters have a tremendous amount of ambition, the desire to succeed and achieve all their goals. They have the mental fortitude and ability to persevere over any obstacle that stands in their way. Their ambition allows them to continually progress through the large volume of heavy weights on a daily basis and break plateaus.

If you have the desire to become a great weightlifter or even a good weightlifter, ask yourself these questions. Do I have the time and the patience to commit to perfecting my technique with the Olympic movements? Do I have the discipline to come in 4­5 days a week to lift 1­2 hours a day with heavy loads? Am I ambitious enough to step up to that bar and give it my all without letting doubt, personal issues or physical pain interrupt my train of thought? If you can answer yes to these questions, then you might have what it takes to be a good and even a great weightlifter. But only actions can truly describe a person’s’ abilities.
