Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush
I have a great affinity for sardines. I really love these little guys. They’ve become a game changer for me when it comes to reeling in my nutrition. They’re jam packed with good stuff for the body, relatively inexpensive, a certified sustainable food source, and convenient. And maybe even more importantly, they may just help in surviving the impending zombie apocalypse.
Diet and nutrition can be a real pain in the ass. It’s a process that first involves figuring out what works best for our body, and then implementing that plan as best we can. So for some, sardines aren’t going to figure into the equation. But if fish is on your menu, then eating sardines should be something to consider. A can of sardines contains about 25g of protein, and 16g of quality Omega 3 rich fat. A diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids has been shown to prevent or reduce inflammation in the body. Reduced inflammation means less joint and muscle soreness, as well as better gut health. If we’re moving better and recovering properly, we can do more CrossFit. And we all know more CrossFit makes us happier people.
In addition to the quality protein and fats, the vitamins and minerals contained in a can of sardines, which I won’t bore you with naming, help lead to a host of other health benefits. They include: a reduction in heart disease and cancer risk, reduced macular degeneration, increased bone and skin health, a boost to the immune system, reduced insulin resistance, and hair loss prevention. Unfortunately for me, the hair already started to go by the time I jumped on the sardine bandwagon, but there’s still hope for some of you.
Cooking all your meals can get old pretty fast. I’ve learned to get around this by batch cooking in a crockpot, and eating two cans of sardines daily. Two cans might not be for everyone, but with this method I can basically knock out my fat and protein for two meals every day. Throw in some starch and veggies, and you’ve got a well rounded meal. This allows me to spend half the time thinking about what to cook, preparing meals, and everything else that comes with eating. Sardines can be bought in bulk at Costco for 2 bucks a pop, or at any grocery store albeit at a higher price. Just make sure to buy the skinless and boneless variety with the olive oil. Crunchy, scaly sardines are not pleasant to eat.
You should head to Costco as soon as you finish reading this article, and start stockpiling sardines. You’ll thank me when the world ends, and you have all this wonderful nutritious food neatly packed in a tiny tin can. Or you can thank me sooner when your skin starts to glow, and you’re hitting an extra WOD a week. If the idea of eating sardines out of a can disturbs you, then try pouring a little honey on them. Sounds crazy, but it’s surprisingly delicious. Whatever way you decide to eat your sardines, just remember to keep a toothbrush handy because fish breath is a good look for nobody.
